FAQ

Q1. Can we rent kimonos for the whole family?

Yes, of course. For Shichi-Go-San photo sessions, we offer houmongi for mothers and hakama sets for fathers. We also have slightly larger kimono sizes available for siblings who are not the main celebrants.

Q2. Can I use the dressing service only?

Absolutely. We offer dressing services even without rental, including on-location dressing (additional travel fees apply). We can also provide rental of any missing accessories. Please feel free to inquire.

Q3. Can you arrange a professional photographer?

Yes. If you would like professional photography, we can introduce and coordinate a photographer for you. Alternatively, we are happy to work with your preferred photographer or studio.

Q4. Can I take my own photos?

Of course. For customers not using Cathy Murai Photography, our basic packages do not include a photographer, so you are more than welcome to take your own photos.

Q5. Where are the photo sessions held?

The location depends on the session type:

  • Mini Session: Held at our Japanese-style balcony or nearby sidewalks in Irvine. Ideal for young children who may find long sessions tiring.
  • Outdoor Session: We shoot at your preferred outdoor location around Irvine or within Orange County. Popular past locations include Jeffrey Open Trail and Bill Barber Memorial Park.
  • Studio Session: Taken at award-winning photographer Cathy Murai's private studio. This controlled setting ensures perfect lighting and is not affected by weather.

Q6. Can I visit the location in advance?

You are welcome to visit public parks on your own. For Cathy's studio, please contact us to coordinate a visit based on her availability. Our home balcony is also available for preview upon request.

Q7. Are accessories included in the kimono rental?

Yes. Kimono rental includes the following complimentary services:

  • Kimono dressing, Hairstyling, Hair accessories, Photo props (e.g., sword, wagasa umbrella, temari balls)

Q8. What should we prepare on the day of the shoot?

Nothing! Just come as you are. We will provide everything you need for the session.

Q9. Where does the dressing take place for outdoor sessions?

To reduce travel stress for your child, we perform the dressing on-site (e.g., at a park or trail). Please wear a camisole or tank top and shorts or leggings for easy dressing.

Q10. Can we use our own kimono for the photos?

Yes, you may. Many families choose to use a kimono passed down from a parent or grandparent. We also offer rental of any missing accessories, so feel free to ask.

Q11. Can I see the kimonos in person before the session?

Yes, you're welcome to visit us before the shoot to view and select your kimono in person.

Q12. Do you offer kimono rentals without a photo session?

While our kimono rentals are primarily intended for commemorative photo shoots, we may be able to accommodate adults for other purposes. Please contact us to discuss your needs.
